I was thinking about what a complex history New Orleans had, so I did some googling, and as often happens, found more than I was looking for:
Black Slave Owners & Free Slaves
Robert E. Lee on Black Troops and the Confederacy
the will of Betsey Sompayrac, a free woman of color and a slave owner
Not directly related to NO/Katrina, but you’ll probably find this interesting: 1st Alabama Cavalry, USV — that’s the Union Army. It’s always been about class, at least as much as race — the small independent hillfolk objected to being forced to fight the rich plantation-owners’ war.
(This is my great-great-grandfather.)
Cool links!
I really like Barbara Hambly’s handling of early New Orleans, in her Benjamin January mysteries. (The first is A Free Man of Color.)
