The Secret Academy is running wild

Why should there only be one day dedicated to artistic embarrassment? I’ve decided to embarrass myself daily until the Novel That Will Not End is done. I just put the beginning of the new direction in section 9.1 at The Secret Academy. From here on out (oh, may it be so!), I’ll post daily whatever [...]

posting here and there

Just put up another installment at The Books. This particular story is interesting, but what it has to do with religion, I still don’t know. Sometimes I think religious Jews and Christians who haven’t read the Bible are making the right choice. But there are bits in the book to shut up the worst of [...]

are crimes of religion actually crimes of nationalism?

Thinking more about my previous post, I was struck with how well “patriotism” substitutes for “religion” in Weinberg’s quote. Which makes sense; patriotism is religion. Anyone who considers a flag a symbol that deserves reverence is a devout worshipper of a god in the pantheon of nations.
If the Crusades were wars of religion, the west [...]

plug-in quotes

I’m always amused by quotes that sound profound until you realize they make as much sense if you change a word or two. Today’s example:
“With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.” Steven Weinberg
It’s [...]

International embarass yourself as an artist day

Because there isn’t enough bad prose on the internets. Thank you, matociquala.
Actually, I think it’s a fun idea. But since enough of my bad prose is in print, I really don’t feel the need to prove that I’ve written things that were worse.

today’s suggested reading

In Praise of Idleness by Bertrand Russell. It’s short and brilliant.
Then visit Chris McLaren’s commentary. I posted a rather long and burbly comment there.
I want to start the Leisure Party now. Or maybe the Idle Society nonprofit group.
I also want to do a condensed translation of Russell’s essay called “Slacker Fu is Mighty.”
And write a [...]

Killing Bill properly

Emma says if she ever meets Quentin Tarrantino, she’s going to hit him. There’s a great two-hour Tarrantino film buried in Kill Bill 1 & 2. We loved the ending. We loved what should’ve been the opening scene, the pregnancy test.
Will-Bob sez, “See #2. Everything you need is there. If you love it, see #1.”
If [...]
