NJ could be Electoral College dropout:
The state Assembly is expected to vote on a measure today that would place New Jersey in an interstate agreement requiring the state’s electors to cast their vote for president and vice president based on the national popular vote winner — effectively circumventing the Constitution by changing the way presidents are elected without an amendment.
I wonder: what happens when an elector violates that state law, and pleads that the Constitution overrides it?
I don’t think this is the best way to fix the Electoral College—it should be done constitutionally. But it’s a good way to spread the word that the problem needs to be fixed.
As far as electors go, if I remember correctly, few if any states have requirements for electors to vote in any particular way. Some electors in the past have ignored their state’s vote and voted as they pleased. But none of those wild votes would’ve affected an election.
