A good article: Popularity Contest, In defense of the ElectoralCollege. It sidesteps the fundamental issue of whether a plurality of citizens should always be able to pick a president, and it has a nice bit of info that’s not put in a crucial context:

Australia and Belgium require their citizens to vote. If not, you get a small fine. Frankly, as a freedom-loving US citizen, I don’t like that, though I don’t think it’s terrible.
But I would have some sympathy for a law that stripped the citizenship of people who didn’t vote and didn’t offer a good reason why. [...]
